Lucy Soni, born Kent, 1973. Lives and works in London. She graduated BA Painting, Chelsea College of Art London (1997), and Turps Art School (2018-2020). She is represented by Voltz Clarke Gallery NYC, USA.
Soni’s practice is rooted in painting, with an intaerest in chaos and control, colour, light, and the urge to mark make. Using the scribble as a motif, the paintings vacillate between abject aspects of found marks and the flat, graphic designs into which they are formalised. This plays out through a hand-made process, with out the use of tape, producing large-scale, intensely colourful paintings, in acrylic on canvas and linen. Immersed and entangled in beautiful detail and complexity. Meticulous, repetitive, obsessive and oriented toward a fast, flawless surface, producing a sort of control out of chaos. Soni’s paintings are exercises in patience, accuracy and taste, seeking to celebrate colour, form and the pursuit of unattainable perfection.
Shows include Changing Atmospheres, Hestercombe Gallery, Somerset (2021); John Moores Painting Prize, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (2018); Pillow Talk, Uniqlo Tate Lates, Tate Modern (2018); An Evening of Performances + DRAF 10th Anniversary, KOKO, London (2017); and Mega Hammer, Glasgow International (2016).
